Lessons I've learned so far from Insecure...

Like many other black millennials, I am a big fan of the HBO series Insecure. I would honestly have to say it's one of the most relatable television shows to come out in Black Hollywood in years. And it's more game-changing given that Issa plays a black girl who is socially awkward. Many times on television, a black girl (especially those of darker skin tones) are relegated to the role of a sassy chick or the best friend of a white girl. (*whispers* I know a bunch of wypipoย who apparently watch the show as well) But I appreciate, Issa & Michaela Coel (of Chewing Gum) to have characters where black people can be weird, awkward or nerdy. Hopefully, in the future, there's a guy answer to Insecure or Chewing Gum that will be just as cringe-worthy to watch. However, in the meantime, let's talk about last night's episode (since it's 3AM on the east coast right now). Here are some lessons from the things I took away from both the third episode of season 3 and just the whole series period so far...

  1. Always have your โ€œF Youโ€ Money*. ๐Ÿ–•๐Ÿพ

  2. You need to stand up for yourself (โ€œtell that gay nigga, no! Black people arenโ€™t monolithic, I will not be a spokespersonโ€).

  3. Have the strength to leave a work environment or career that is truly not for you.

  4. FELLAS: if a woman wants more than you do, THEN YOU NEED TO FALL BACKย before your ding-a-ling gets tossed in a field somewhere.

  5. Itโ€™s never too late to switch careers (maybe invest in a life/career coach to hone on what you really want to if youโ€™re undecided).

  6. If you got it, flaunt itโ€ฆ (talking about sex appeal).

  7. wherever you live or whoever you live with, know what youโ€™re signing up for.

  8. Jealously is a disease especially when it comes to careers.

  9. Leave the non-ambitious-couch-potato-niggas alone!!!!

*I'm using nigga in reference to the character's gender (the gay white guy that works at Issa's job)

*Money that you have saved up in case you ever end up in a situation where either you have to switch jobs/career, or you and your ex-lover end up moving out of an apartment/house you got together ย
